The Materials Technology Unit of VITO (Mol, Belgium) applies two different technologies for layer wise buildup of 3D components: laser cladding and three dimensional fiber deposition (3DFD).
Since many years now, VITO has a broad expertise in laser cladding and the application of the technology for repair purpose and even for the manufacturing of complete components.
Laser cladding allows for a buildup of metal features onto existing parts and for the production of graded structures by varying the powder feed composition during the cladding process.
On the other hand VITO also developed a three dimensional fiber deposition (3DFD) process to make porous structures with very regular pore architecture. Metallic as well as ceramic parts can be produced using this innovative 3DFD technology.
